Urban Bikes – A Green Solution for Torres Vedras
Agostinhas: Urban Bikes is an innovative initiative aimed at promoting sustainable mobility in the city of Torres Vedras, Portugal. The project, launched in June 2013, offers free bicycle rentals to all residents, with a special focus on young people and seniors. The programme is managed by the municipal company Promotorres and is part of a broader effort to reduce car dependency and environmental impact.
Easy, eco-friendly transport for all
The goal of the project is to provide an accessible, sustainable mode of transport that promotes speed, flexibility, and reduced environmental impact. The bikes are free for residents aged 14 and above enrolled in local schools and for seniors over 55 involved in the Municipal Senior Sports Project. Frequent users can purchase a 10-Euro card, while occasional users pay just 5 Euros for a one-year subscription. The bikes are available from 7 am to 10 pm.
Targeting accessibility and inclusivity
The programme prioritises accessibility for young people and seniors while being open to all city residents. By offering a free and environmentally friendly transportation option, the initiative contributes to reducing fossil fuel consumption and lowering atmospheric emissions. Additionally, it fosters a sense of local identity and strengthens the community’s connection to sustainable urban mobility.
