Empowering seniors through green mobility
The GreenSAM project is dedicated to improving green mobility for seniors in Riga, Latvia, a city where more than 168,300 senior residents face mobility challenges. This initiative aims to make the city’s transport more accessible and environmentally friendly for elderly citizens, who have often been excluded from the planning process. The project focuses on educating and empowering seniors to participate in sustainable urban development.
Transforming urban spaces for the elderly
In collaboration with the Riga Municipal Agency “Riga Energy Agency” (REA) and the Day Center “Rasa”, the GreenSAM project creates a mobility laboratory and outdoor spaces tailored to seniors. These spaces are designed to encourage active use of green transport solutions, while also providing digital training to improve seniors’ technology skills. The project bridges the gap between seniors and city planners, ensuring their needs are considered in urban mobility planning.
Impactful outcomes for an inclusive city
Through the GreenSAM project, key outcomes include the creation of a Mobility as a Service (MaaS) platform and improved public transport stops and streets in Riga. The project hosted eight mobility lab events with 242 participants, and surveys revealed that 90% of seniors felt more informed about green mobility. Additionally, guidelines for urban planners have been developed to make public spaces more senior-friendly, ensuring long-term sustainability.
