Cycling for change in Bratislava
Founded in 1999, Cyklokoalícia is a civic association dedicated to supporting and promoting urban cycling in Bratislava and Slovakia. Initially formed by a group of cycling enthusiasts, the coalition has evolved into a key player in shaping public policies related to cycling infrastructure. Cyklokoalícia strives to make cycling a safer and more accessible option for all city residents.
Driving the cycling revolution
Cyklokoalícia’s main activities include advocating for better cycling policies at the local, regional, and national levels, mapping cycling routes, and organising community events like Critical Mass. In 2012, the organisation launched Bratislava’s first-ever bike-sharing system, WhiteBike, and operates Slovakia’s only cargo bike rental service, encouraging sustainable urban transport.
Impacting policies and raising awareness
Cyklokoalícia’s efforts led to the creation of the Commission for Cycling Transport within Bratislava’s City Hall in 2014, a significant step in developing cycling-friendly policies. The group has produced numerous strategic documents that promote cycling in Bratislava and other cities, including Košice, Trnava, and Zvolen, while also raising awareness about the need for better urban cycling infrastructure.
