A green revolution on two wheels
The Bike to Work campaign, initiated by the Civic Cycling Initiative in Slovakia, has grown from a local event in 2012 to a nationwide movement. It encourages employees to cycle to work, promoting sustainable mobility while reducing CO2 emissions. The campaign brings together cyclists, local authorities, and employers to create a community committed to eco-friendly transport solutions.
Pedal-powered participation
The campaign engages employees through teams of two or more colleagues, who track their biking and walking activities via an online system. Municipalities and employers are essential partners, with local coordinators ensuring smooth operation. The initiative promotes cycling infrastructure and healthy lifestyles while encouraging collaboration across different sectors.
Engagement at every level
From local authorities to national institutions, the Bike to Work campaign relies on widespread support. In 2022, 105 municipalities and over 13,000 participants from 1,322 employers took part. By involving local governments and employers, the campaign ensures lasting impact through the promotion of cycling infrastructure and sustainability practices at all levels. In 2022, participants saved over 550,000 kg of CO2 through cycling and walking. The simplicity of registration, the involvement of local governments, and the support from key partners, including the Ministry of Transport, make the campaign a success. It continues to grow, serving as an inspiration for similar projects in other countries.
