Experienced specialists pass on knowledge on sustainability in Lithuania

Sustain Academy is an initiative that hires sustainability specialists with real-world experience to teach the new generation of specialists. This happens through selling of sustainability courses. The academy positions itself as the first educational organisation in Lithuania that prepares sustainability specialists for businesses and organisations.

The academy has a core team of lecturers, which are usually professionals from other organisations. Thus, teaching sustainability is not their main job. The positioning of lecturers as specialists from other organisations has multiple advantages. Sustain Academy gains credibility by having highly qualified lecturers with real-world practical experience in large businesses. Moreover, the specialists and the organisations they represent improve their public relations by associating with the academy.

Fighting food insecurity in Lithuania 

Maisto Bankas is a non-profit organisation in Lithuania focused on alleviating food insecurity. The initiative works by distributing food donations to individuals and families in need, with a core group of volunteers driving its activities. The organisation also educates the public on the importance of reducing food waste, promoting sustainability alongside its charitable work. 

Volunteers and partnerships at the heart of change 
Volunteers are at the core of Maisto Bankas, assisting in food collection, distribution, and awareness-raising activities. The organisation partners with both private and public entities for fundraising and events, ensuring a broad support base. Through these collaborations, Maisto Bankas effectively reaches communities across Lithuania, helping those who are struggling to provide for themselves. 

Targeting those who need it most
The initiative primarily supports low-income individuals, including the elderly, families with many children, and people in rural or poor urban areas. Many beneficiaries are from ethnic minorities or vulnerable groups, such as Ukrainian refugees. Maisto Bankas plays a vital role in helping these communities access the food they need, while also engaging them in volunteer work to foster a sense of solidarity.

Linava, Lithuania

An association unifying transportation businesses

“Linava” is the Lithuanian national association of motor carriers, representing the transport sector in Lithuania and abroad.

One of their initiatives is to encourage the members of the association to provide free regional transportation for rural citizens, especially for those stricken by poverty or those with disabilities. The initiative is targeted at rural residents who wish to travel from one rural location to another within the same region. The initiative particularly aims at providing transportation for individuals with disabilities or those who cannot afford transportation, including some of the elderly rural citizens.

With the increased fuel prices, the initiative provides a valuable service to the community, resulting in increased well-being for the rural people benefiting from it.

The association agreed on the initiative to provide free regional transportation in the districts of Mažeikiai, Šilalė, Rokiškis and Naujosi Akmenė among others. This initiative could easily be replicated in areas where public transportation for city-to-city travel is popular.
