A solidarity bike workshop for all

Cyclofficine, located in Angoulême, France, is a bicycle repair workshop created in 2013 with a clear mission: to promote bicycle usage while supporting environmental sustainability. The initiative focuses on inclusivity and solidarity by offering repair services, training, and mobility support to vulnerable groups, including women, young exiles, people with disabilities, and students. Their efforts align with fostering green mobility and recycling, aiming to combat climate change and reduce urban pollution. 

Targeting vulnerability
The workshop offers a range of services, including repair workshops for women, exiles, and students, while providing free services to low-income individuals. With 520 hours of training and 576 bicycles recovered, Cyclofficine makes an environmental impact by diverting waste from landfills and providing mobility to those who need it most. 

Promoting inclusion
Cyclofficine focuses on providing mobility solutions for people with disabilities, young exiles, and students. The initiative equips them with repaired bicycles and teaches mechanics skills to promote independence and sustainable transport options.

French citizen-led initiative fights fuel poverty with innovative method

The citizen-led initiative Energie Solidaire collects funds and disburses them to organisations that carry out concrete programmes to fight fuel poverty. The initiative was founded in 2017 by a group of citizens committed to the energy transition and wishing to act against fuel poverty. It aims to create new links of solidarity between consumers, as well as between producers and consumers.

Energy donations
The association has developed a new and innovative type of donation, namely that of energy donations from energy producers. As such, Energie Solidaire implements innovative fundraising mechanisms via micro-donations from consumers of the electricity supplier Enercoop, as well as via energy donations from small electricity producers associated with this supplier.

Project support
The initiative also organises a project call for associations that set up programmes to combat fuel poverty, and monitors the supported programmes. Consequently, Energie Solidaire supports several associations and their associated programmes each year. In 2021, the funds paid to the associations reached €100,000.

For low-income households
Vulnerable groups targeted by the initiative include urban and rural households which struggle to afford the energy costs for thermal comfort or other energy services.

Toques en Stock, France

Toques en Stock is a French association that aims to organise regular cooking workshops to counter food insecurity among vulnerable segments of the population. These cooking workshops offer people access to healthy food and teach them how to cook their own, while minimising food waste by recycling afterwards.

Target groups of the initiative include people (mostly women) who live in temporary emergency accommodation in the broader Paris region (i.e., refugees, people with very low or no income, survivors of trafficking or exploitation, etc.). This means that the recipes that are used are adapted to their limited circumstances in terms of available equipment.

SO-II project, France

Developing and monitoring a long-term observation network

The SO-II project was funded in 2019 by MUSE-Montpellier University of Excellence. It has a promising vision; building a Flood Impact Observers Network aiming to develop innovative tools to observe the impacts of floods which will provide the necessary intervention for vulnerable groups: residents, farmers and entrepreneurs exposed to natural phenomena. To enlarge this network, field surveys have been conducted where respondents agreed to be part of this observation group. The network is maintained and developed through workshops and telephone interviews.

Observing the floods impact for better adaptive measures

The project gathers leading actors from different disciplines who work together on integrated and adaptive water management issues. There are three tasks carried out within this initiative:

(1) Creating and monitoring a long-term network of people facing the risk of floods: to raise awareness about the issue and disseminate knowledge while involving the participants in the project’s mission.

(2) Acknowledging the lessons learnt from previous floods: to allow the exchange of expertise between key actors, analyze and understand the combined effects of these floods thus estimate of the impacts of these natural disasters on the study area.

(3) Monitoring of the adaptation of the buildings through field surveys conducted in the study area: to identify options for governance and adaptation in a complex and uncertain environment.
