Campaigns for protection against fuel poverty in the United Kingdom

Fuel Poverty Action is a campaigning organisation that aims to change policy in order to protect people from fuel poverty. The initiative aims to challenge energy companies on their pricing, and pushes for policies and actions that can provide home insulation and community-owned sustainable and affordable energy.

Mobilising activists
The initiative is mainly concerned with mobilising activists in order to demand change in relation to energy policies and pricing. It does this through planning monthly meetings in London; organising coffee mornings, information sessions, and protests; coordinating conferences on topics relating to energy and fuel poverty; distributing a weekly newsletter; and lobbying decisionmakers, for example through media campaigns, interviews and report production.

No leaders
The initiative’s organisation is decentralised as a key part of its organisational philosophy. The group is directed by the collective decisions made by all members of the group, and it aims to minimise hierarchies in organisation and thus does not have any official leadership.

Relevant groups
Fuel Poverty Action is inclusive and open to all. However, given the nature of fuel poverty there are key sectors of society that are particularly relevant to the initiative – those on a low income, disabled individuals, those with young children, and older people, as well as those in receipt of state benefits.

MindFood, UK

MindFood is an organisation that offers the opportunity to engage in food-growing activities (among other pursuits) to people struggling with mental health issues, with the goal of making edible gardening more inclusive and accessible, while being supportive of people’s overall (mental) wellbeing.

Based in West London, the initiative engages in ecotherapy with people who either signed up themselves or were referred by a GP. The main activity that is offered consists of a six-week course consisting of weekly sessions that aim to reduce depression, stress and anxiety through edible gardening.

After involvement in the programme, most participants are found to have implemented positive changes in their diets, and to display increases in (self-reported) wellbeing and physical health measurements.

SoulRiders, UK

Tackling inequalities and loneliness through access to sustainable mobility

SoulRiders is a community-led charitable organisation based in the south-side of Glasgow, Scotland. The initiative originated and is led by Rashid Khaliq, a Glasgow resident who has used his personal experience of cycling as a member of an ethnic minority in order to provide cycling support to others in vulnerable or minority groups.

The aim of SoulRiders is to use bikes to tackle inequalities, especially related to ethnicity, and overcome loneliness by bringing diverse communities together. The organisation refurbishes donated bikes that can then be given back to the community, carries out repairs, and offers mechanical training.

A key area of focus is on encouraging cycling among ethnic minorities, and especially children, young people, and women within ethnic minority groups. The initiative runs three specific programmes:
– SoulKids, a cycling and personal development programme aimed at children and teenagers,
– SoulSisters, a female-led programme designed to increase women’s confidence in cycling through group training and rides
– Revolutionize, an e-cargo bike green collection and delivery service.
