A city on two wheels 

In the heart of Sweden, the Uppsala Cycling Association (UCF) has been transforming how citizens move around their city. Founded in 2006, this non-partisan association promotes everyday cycling as a pathway to a sustainable future. With public education, advocacy, and community-led initiatives, UCF encourages people to swap cars for bicycles. 

Bikes, not barriers 
One of UCF’s flagship projects is Sweden’s largest cargo bike pool, offering 11 cargo bikes and 17 bike carts to members. With vehicles hosted by local volunteers and funded by project grants, borrowing is either free or very low cost. This makes sustainable transport accessible to families and individuals with limited incomes. 

Power to the people 
UCF actively collaborates with local authorities and organisations such as Fridays for Future and the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation. This network-driven model empowers citizens to influence climate policies and city planning. UCF fosters shared responsibility, social learning, and community trust.

By tackling issues like transport poverty and post-lockdown mobility, UCF improves urban life quality—less noise, less pollution, more connection. Founded in 2022, TågcykelTouring is a Swedish non-profit that promotes inspiring, climate-friendly travel by combining trains and bicycles. It gathers essential travel info and connects like-minded individuals via social media to share tips, bikes, and even overnight stays. The aim is to make sustainable mobility not only practical, but exciting and accessible. 

Bikes, trains and tips galore 
The heart of the initiative lies in its resourceful website and active Facebook group. These platforms provide detailed guidance on train routes that accept bikes, folding bike options, affordable accommodation, and practical travel tips. Users also exchange real-life experiences, questions, and local know-how for both leisure and daily commuting. 

A travel community on a mission 
TågcykelTouring reaches out to people looking for cheaper, greener ways to travel—especially those in financially vulnerable situations. It makes long-distance, sustainable travel feasible for families, pensioners, and rural dwellers while building a supportive transnational community where no one has to travel alone. 

Changing habits, one ride at a time 
By encouraging low-carbon travel and removing practical barriers, this initiative empowers individuals to choose bikes and trains over cars and planes. Its accessible format fills a real gap for people seeking affordable, easy alternatives, and its ripple effect could even inspire more climate-friendly commuting habits.

Swedish non-profit organisation supports and educates people to initiate local transitions

Omställningsnätverket (The Transition Network) is a non-profit association that works to educate, encourage, and support local transition initiatives in Sweden since 2013. For this, they provide courses, spread information, and organise annual conferences throughout Sweden. The Swedish Transition Network is part of the International Transition Network, which brings together more than 1000 local transition initiatives in over 50 countries.

Local development
The organisation’s members are community groups and village councils, as well as local heritage associations and sports clubs, each dedicated to local sustainable development in their village or district. Examples of members’ activities include organising Midsummer celebrations and promoting their village as an attractive place to live and work.

Training, film and research
To encourage local initiatives, Omställningsnätverket offers a variety of courses and trainings. The basic two-day course provides helpful tools to start individual or collective change for anyone who is interested. Taking an artistic perspective, Omställningsnätverket co-created a film in 2021 that aims to inspire people to make positive changes in their lives and contribute to a more sustainable and just world. Another one of Omställningsnätverket’s activities is participating in the research project “Beyond the opportunity horizon: tools for exploring local energy transition”, aiming to provide new perspectives that can facilitate transition.

Behaviour change towards a green transition
The non-profit organisation targets the whole Swedish society and in particular those who are affected by the green societal transition. It has initiated and motivated a vast number of small-scale and larger-scale activities by citizens and organisations all over the country. As such, it works towards advancing awareness and behaviour change to improve sustainability.
